Financial company photography and branding are more visually sophisticated than, say, imagery used in promoting manufacturing and product placement. For financial firms, the "product" is harder to illustrate. The consumer isn't buying into the firm's money rate or specific fund, they're buying into the brain power and professionalism of a group of individuals. The firm's audience wants to know that there are wheels burning behind the eyes of the firm's team members. They want to know that the team coordinates well. And that they're approachable, available, and open-minded. That they care about your welfare and will listen to your ideas. This is a hard thing to portray in just a couple of pictures, no doubt.
I've been lucky in that the companies I tend to work with, that can afford top-tier photography, generally employ really smart and really put-together people who exude confidence and integrity. My job, then, is to set up the circumstances wherein these authoritative people can be at their best. My commitment is to portray them with a naturalness and honesty that doesn't make them seem two-dimensional. We've all seen really smart and really professional people look wooden and posed, which ends up looking more dilettantish than trustworthy.
The trick to taking successful financial company photography is situating the team in a way that they can interact in a natural manner. Once they're working together on a real project and sharing real ideas, you don't have to pose them, you only have to capture what they're doing in an innovative and convincing way. You have to distill the interaction down to the foundation of an idea or an exec's eyes, the gesture that accompanies a dynamic collaboration, or the grey matter activity in an exec's face as they listen to others and absorb new perceptions.
